As I work with clients using spirit-based hypnotherapy, one of the first things we discuss is terminology. Throughout the session, I use the phrase "Spirit" as a generic term respecting every clients experience with Loving Presence. For those who are most comfortable with a religious point of view, the "Loving Presence" may be God, Jesus, the Holy Mother, Buddha or others. For those with a Humanist point of view, Loving Presence may be experienced as a profound respect for the worth and dignity of all people and the individual's own inner wisdom. Others experience Loving Presence as guides, teachers, ancestors or departed ones. Regardless of how it is defined, for most people, the connection - a real, felt connection - with Spirit is often inconsistent at best.
Although guidance, wisdom and support is always available to us, the noise, distractions and constant input from our external world can make accessing the inner world difficult or impossible. Surprisingly, this difficulty connecting can be just as much a challenge when things are going wonderfully as when life is very difficult.
In my experience, the first step in connection is identifying a way to quiet the internal chatter so that you can recognize the voice of Wisdom as it flows through you. For some, traditional meditation is a perfect process, but it is most definitely not the only way. For some, it is running, or dance; for others, gardening or walking in the woods or the shoreline of a lake. Any activity that allows you to be more fully present to YOURSELF, in the present moment, creates a space for Spirit to connect with you.
The second step, confidently knowing the difference between your own random thoughts and the voice of Spirit, is a matter of time and practice. Gradually, you will notice something different, a tone, a choice of words, a timing that is not how you typically think or "inner talk". Or there may be a bodily sensation in breath, heartbeat, tingling - some other (subtle) way that Spirit is saying "Pay Attention". As you notice these more and more, your confidence, and your trust, will undoubtedly grow.
There are, or course, many other ways that you can receive guidance and support from Spirit such as prayer, visualization, dreamwork, pendulum work, writing, mediumship or spirit-based hypnotherapy.
